Venloop Half Marathon Review — Running 21 km in Venlo

A first half marathon through Limburg — with sensor data, honest preparation notes, and the finish line feeling.

The Venloop in Venlo was Willem's first half marathon — 21.1 kilometres through the Limburg countryside and city streets, wearing sensors, tracking heart rate, and learning what it means to run further than your body thinks it can.

The Venloop is a well-organised half marathon in Venlo, in the southern Dutch province of Limburg. The course is largely flat with a few gentle hills — a good choice for a first half marathon.

Willem ran it wearing a Whoop Strap and Apple Watch, tracking heart rate throughout. The data tells a story: a conservative start, a steady middle section, and the final 5 kilometres where heart rate climbs even as pace drops — the body fighting to maintain what the legs can barely deliver.

The atmosphere in Venlo is enthusiastic — locals line the streets, music at every corner, and the finish in the city centre feels earned.

This race was the stepping stone to Willem's full marathon later that year. The half taught him pacing, nutrition timing, and the mental skill of running through discomfort.
