How to Remove Paint from a Bike Frame

Chemical stripper, sandpaper, patience — the complete strip-and-repaint guide.

Whether you're restoring a vintage bike or customising a new one, removing paint from a steel frame is the first step. Here's the practical guide: which stripper to use, how long to wait, and how to get down to bare metal cleanly.

Chemical paint stripper is the most effective method for steel frames. Apply a thick layer, wrap in plastic film, and wait 4-8 hours. The paint bubbles and peels off in sheets.

Important: work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Wear gloves and eye protection. Chemical strippers are aggressive — that's what makes them effective.

After stripping, use fine sandpaper (400 grit) to remove any remaining paint from crevices and around lugs. Clean the bare metal with degreaser before priming.

Willem used this process on both his 1978 Batavus Champion restoration and his minimalist road bike build — the same technique works on any steel frame.
