Shimano 7-Speed Shift Cable Replacement — Step by Step

The most bookmarked bike repair guide on the site — with photos of every step.

Replacing a shift cable on a Shimano 7-speed system is one of the most common bike repairs — and one of the most searched. Here's the complete guide with photos of every step, from removing the old cable to adjusting the derailleur.

A worn shift cable causes sloppy gear changes, ghost shifts, and frustration. Replacing it takes 30 minutes and costs almost nothing.

What you need: a new inner cable, cable cutters, a 5mm Allen key, and optionally a new outer cable housing.

The steps: loosen the cable anchor bolt on the derailleur, pull the old cable out from the shifter end, thread the new cable through the shifter and along the frame, through the derailleur, and tighten the anchor bolt. Then adjust the barrel adjuster until shifts are crisp.

The trick most guides skip: before tightening the anchor bolt, shift to the highest gear (smallest cog) and pull the cable taut by hand. This sets the correct baseline tension.
